Cabbage Rolls

Updated: Oct 10, 2021

Half a head of cabbage

Boil the cabbage in a pot with salted water for 20 minutes. Take the cabbage out and remove the leaves. Slice off the bottom of the middle thick part of the cabbage leave vein. It makes folding the leaf easier. Place the cooked prepared leaves on a tray. About 8 to ten leaves. Have a few smaller pieces on hand to patch any torn leaves.

300g minced pork or chicken

1 big onion, diced finely

3 garlic, minced finely

2 tablespoons of pasta sauce

1 cup of cooked rice

half a cup of diced carrot and peas

salt and pepper

Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a skillet and saute the onions for 2 minutes and then followed by the garlic. Saute for another minute. Add the minced meat and toss about for 3 minutes. Season meat with salt and pepper. Add the vegetables and pasta sauce. Mix well. Then stir in the rice and combine all the ingredients together. Set aside. Cool slightly so its easy to handle.

Place a whole cabbage leave on a plate. if there are any torn patches, place another smaller piece of cabbage leave to patch it up. Spoon one or two tablespoons of filling onto the cabbage leaf. Turn the sides in and then start rolling from the bottom up. place on a plate or tray and repeat with the rest of the ingredients until there is no more filling left. Tie parcels with thread.

You can now place your cabbage rolls in dish, spoon over pasta sauce and grated cheese and bake for 15 minutes or you can stew it in a gravy.

Make a simple soup with garlic and ginger stir fry. Add water, scallions, oyster sauce and light soy sauce. Season with a little sugar, salt and white pepper. Add the cabbage rolls to the simple soup and stew for 5 minutes. You do not need to cook much because everything is already cooked separately on its own.
