Ever forgotten an ingredient!!??

Updated: May 23, 2020

Have You ever forgotten an ingredient while baking a cake or cooking a dish? I am sure we all have at one time or another. Some things can be salvaged by adding it later. But try baking the batter to a cake for 10 minutes and then remember that you forgot to add the flour! Horrors!!

There was once that I was baking a cake and I had separated the yolks and whites and placed them in different bowls. I then proceeded to cream the egg yolks with the butter and sugar and beat the egg whites to a foam. However, I leaned my recipe book against my bowl of egg whites and there it stayed hidden. I added the flour and wondered why my batter was thick. But I baked it anyway and started cleaning the things in the sink. When I removed my recipe book to keep it, it was only then that I realized that I had forgotten to add the egg whites!! Too late. The cake had been baking for 15 minutes.

The cake came out a bit heavy and dry but it was still edible. I suppose it happens to the best of us. The lesson to be learned here - keep the recipe book behind all the ingredients.

It was an orange cake and I forgot to put the orange juice and zest. Sometimes when you make a cake often enough, you tend to do it automatically. I thought I put the juice in but later found out that I had not. It was still in the fridge! It was just a plain cake. So I made a cream cheese, orange flavoured frosting and it did the trick. Tasted great. Some things you can remedy quite easily.
