French Toast (Sweet) and Bombay Toast (Savoury)

Apparently, according to the French Chef, French toast is made using the french loaf that has hardened. Soaking it in beaten egg and milk mixture softens the bread and then frying it in butter makes it so good to eat....anytime. But if you don't have french loaf, you can always use any bread that you have in store.

4 slices of french loaf bread

1 egg

5 tablespoons of milk

1 teaspoon of sugar

pinch of salt

Beat the egg and milk in a plate.Add the sugar and pinch of salt. Beat to mix well.

Heat a frying pan with 1 teaspoon of butter in it. Dip the slices of bread in the egg mixture on both sides and fry in the pan until nicely light browned. Fry the rest of the bread and use more butter if necessary. Place on a plate with fruit. I used blueberries and strawberries here but you could also eat it with bananas.

Sprinkle a light dusting of icing (or confectioner's sugar) on top. Alternatively, you could drizzle a little syrup or honey instead of icing sugar. You then need not add sugar to the egg mixture.

Savoury Bombay Toast

4 slices of plain bread

1 egg

4 tablespoons water

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 red chilli, sliced (optional)

a sprig of coriander leaves, chopped

2 tablespoons thinly sliced white onions

Beat the egg, water and salt together. Add the chilli , coriander leaves and onions Mix well.

Heat about 1 teaspoon oil in a frying pan. Dip the bread into the egg mixture and put into the pan. Dish some of the onion, chilli and coriander leaves onto the bread. Flip the bread carefully after one minute. Try to get a nice light brown toast colour.

Depending on your pan size, you may have to do this in two batches. Add more oil if necessary. Put on the plate and serve with chilli or tomato sauce. You can also serve other salad vegetables with it. Some like to fill the bread with potato aloo and eat it like a sandwhich.
